Kecak and Fire Dance commonly called the Cak Dance or Fire Dance, is a mass entertainment performance dance that depicts the art of acting and is not accompanied by a musical instrument or gamelan but only accompanied by a chorus of a group of male dancers totaling around 70 people lining up in a circle wearing kamben (sarong) which is which is colored black and white squares like a chessboard will make sound like acapela with word 'cak cak cak cak'. From there the name Kecak was created. This dance is very sacred, it can be seen from the dancers who are burning with fire, but experiencing immunity and not burning, so this dance is better known as the Kecak and Fire Dance.
In the year 1930s, a Balinese dance artist named Wayan Limbak and a German painter named Walter Spies collaborated to create a kecak dance. This dance is inspired by traditional ritual dances performed by the Balinese people which are then added to the Ramayana story in Hindu beliefs to be displayed as an art performance when tourists come to Bali.
The kecak and fire dance is usually performed by dozens of shirtless men wearing black and white plaid kamben (sarong) from the waist to the top of the knee. Kecak and fire dance was first performed in several villages, one of which is Bona Village, Gianyar.
Along with the interest of many tourists who want to watch this dance, this dance has developed to all regions in Bali and is always presented during activities such as festivals held by the government and the private sector.
Balinese dance is not spared from mythology stories, because it will make the dance very interesting to watch. This dance takes a story from the mythology of Ramayana. As for the story in the kecak dance and fire taken from the story of Ramayana for staging, it is told that a very wise King named Sang Rama Dewa was trying to save his queen named Dewi Sita who was kidnapped by a very evil giant king named Rahwana. The long and very dangerous journey was then taken by Sang Rama Dewa accompanied by his younger brother named Admiral.
When Raja Rahwana kidnapped Dewi Sita, on his way he was seen by Sang Jatayu, a Garuda bird who was a friend of Sang Rama Dewa. When Jatayu found out that the woman who was being kidnapped by Rahwana was the empress of her best friend,
Sang Rama Dewa, the Jatayu bird also tried to save the empress. But because the power of Rahwana exceeds Jatayu, then Jatayu can be defeated.
Sang Rama Dewa who was only accompanied by his younger brother Laksamana then met with Sang Hanoman, a warlord of the monkey army who was the nephew of a monkey king named Sugriwa. Because he once felt indebted to Rama Dewa, the monkey army led by warlord Hanoman and Raja Sugriwa were willing to help Rama Dewa to recapture his queen. Due to his magic, Hanoman's white monkey was able to infiltrate the palace of King Rahwana and then meet the Goddess Sita. Then with his magic, Hanoman's White Monkey burned the palace of Raja Rahwana which in a beautiful performance was illustrated with fire dance. Where Hanoman was later captured and burned by the Rahwana soldiers who were all giants.
Hanoman's struggle in helping Rama Dewa to get his queen back, becomes a very interesting story and dance for you to enjoy. In the staging will also appear some other characters that are interesting for you to observe more deeply because it is performed by dancers who are so weak in performing their respective characters.
