This black and white striped snake is known to the local community as the sacred snake of Tanah Lot Bali.

Meaning of the word Tanah Lot

The word Tanah Lot is taken from two syllables, namely the word "Tanah" which means coral which resembles a dyke or island and the word "Lot or Lod" which means sea. So the word Tanah Lot means a small island floating in the sea. In this place, it was used during the Megalithic era as a holy place which can be proven by the discovery of menhirs. Based on environmental conditions, the structure of Tanah Lot Temple was built on a rocky plain with irregular angles consisting of only one plain yard as offal. The difference between Tanah Lot Temple and other temples on the island of Bali is that the Tanah Lot temple does not have a yard because it is built on a rocky plain.

History of Tanah Lot Temple

It is told in the 15th century that a powerful priest named Bhagawan Dang Hyang Nirartha or known as Dang Hyang Dwijendra was on a mission to spread Hinduism from Java to Bali. And the ruler at this time in Bali was Raja Dalem Waturenggong, hearing the news that Bhagawan Dang Hyang Nirartha was planning to go to Bali, the King was very happy and welcomed Dang Hyang Nirartha's arrival in carrying out his mission, so that the spread of Hinduism made it to remote areas. - remote villages on the island of Bali.
At one point while traveling to villages in Bali, the priest saw a holy light from the southern sea of Bali, so Dang Hyang Nirartha rushed to find the location of the light and arrived at a beach in a village called Beraban village in Tabanan Regency. At that time the village of Beraban was led by Bendesa Beraban Sakti where this bendesa strongly opposed the teachings of Dang Hyang Nirartha in spreading Hinduism because this Bendesa adheres to monotheism.
Then Dang Hyang Nirartha meditated on a rock that resembled the shape of a parrot that was originally on land. In various ways, Bendesa Beraban wanted to expel Dang Hyang Nirartha from his meditation place. Feeling disturbed by Bendesa who wanted to throw him out while meditating, the priest moved the rock where he meditated to the middle of the beach so that he could be calm in meditating and the bendesa could not disturb him anymore.
Seeing this, Bendesa recognized Dang Hyang Nirartha's supernatural powers by becoming his follower to embrace Hinduism along with all local residents. Before leaving Beraban village, Dang Hyang Nirartha gave a keris to Beraban village, the keris called Keris Ki Baru Gajah.
The keris has the power to eliminate all diseases that attack plants. The keris is stored at Puri Kediri and a religious ceremony is made at Tanah Lot Temple every six months. Since this is routinely done by the villagers of Beraban, the welfare of the population has greatly increased with abundant agricultural crops and they live with mutual respect.
