Dalem Ped Temple or Pura Dalem Ped is located in Ped Village, Sampalan, Nusa Penida Island. This temple is always visited by Hindus in Bali to ask for security, protection, prosperity and tranquility. And also this place is used as a spiritual tour in Nusa Penida. This temple is located about 50 meters south of the seashore of the Nusa Strait. Because of its very broad influence and it is believed to provide happiness for those praying there, Dalem Ped Temple has become famous in all corners of Bali for asking for safety, prosperity, grace, and tranquility. Its quiet place exudes a thick spiritual aura, so that the Pura Dalem Penataran Ped is a popular spiritual tourism destination.

The origin of the name Dalem Ped Temple

According to Drs. Wayan Putera Prata in the History Book of Nusa and the History of Dalem Ped Temple said that there are several versions of the origin of the name Dalem Ped.

• Mentioning that Dalem Ped Temple was originally named Dalem Nusa Temple, where in the name of Dewa Agung, the name Dalem Nusa was changed to Dalem Ped by royal figures at Puri Klungkung
• Another version states that once Ida Pedanda Abiansemal lost three tapels (masks), and he heard the tapels appear magically at Pura Dalem Nusa, so he and his followers went to Dalem Nusa Island side by side (together in Bali it is called by the name Mepeed) to Nusa Penida. We heard the news that three tapels had appeared at Pura Dalem Nusa. He finally arrived at Dalem Nusa Temple and saw the tapel there, and he also saw that the tapel had healing benefits for the surrounding people, so he let the tapel there as long as the community maintained and gave the ceremony according to the provisions.

History of Dalem Ped Temple Nusa Penida

It is said that 2 children (one boy and one girl) were born as a result of the marriage between I Renggan and Ni Merahim, where a boy named I Gede Macaling was born in Saka 180 and a daughter named Ni Tole was born in the year 185. After their sons and daughters grew up, the daughter, named Ni Tole, married and made empress by Dalem Sawang who became King of Nusa Penida.
Meanwhile, the son, I Gede Macaling, who likes to meditate, also had a wife who had the title Sang Ayu Mas Rajeg Bumi, in the year 250 I Gede Macaling began meditating on Lord Shiva, finally he gave the gift of magic Kanda Sange to I Gede Macaling. The Ajian Kanda Sanga was so powerful that it made I Gede Macaling's appearance change, where his changes included a body that was getting bigger, and had long fangs, where the source of strength from I Gede Macaling was in his fangs. Because of this change, the sound that was generated made the earth tremble until it reached Marcapada (Realm of the Gods).
Then immediately the universe became shaken, the noise, fear, horror caused by the appearance and voice of I Gede Mecaling that howled day and night made a scene in Marcapada, which made the gods restless and had a meeting between the gods and Dewa Indra was sent and fought with I Gede Macaling because I Gede Macaling's powers made Dewa Indra unable to defeat him and by doing tactics to find his weaknesses and finally after years of Dewa Indra carried out his ploy with all tricks and finally in Saka 290, Lord Indra succeeded in cutting off both of his fangs, thus making I Gede Macaling lose because his fangs were the source of his strength.

Due to defeat, I Gede Macaling retreated and looked for a place to meditate and here I Gede Macaling meditated and worshiped Lord Rudra, because of his diligent meditation, Lord Rudra gave 5 powers called Panca taksu which consisted of Taksu Balian (Shamanism), Taksu Penolak Grubug (Plague-Repelling Power), Taksu Kemeranan (Science to Removed Pest), Taksu Kesaktian (Magic Power) and Taksu Pangeger.
Once upon a time, Dalem Sawangan (King of Nusa Penida) died from fighting with Dalem Dukut, and I Gede Macaling was appointed King to replace Dalem Sawangan who died on the battlefield. The uniqueness of I Gede Macaling when he became King, he not only led society among humans, but he also led unseen people, in Bali known as Wong Samar.
Because of I Gede Macaling's powers who could lead in two realms, he was given the title Ratu Gede Samudra. In addition, it is also told that I Gede Macaling had meditated on Mount Tohlangkir and Mount Agung, so he was given the mandate or authority to take evil human victims. So because of this story, many Balian prayed to Pura Dalem Ped to ask for safety, protection, prosperity and tranquility.

I Gede Mecaling continued to be king in Nusa penida at that time with the title of Papak Poleng. While the wife of I Gede Mecaling who is called Sang Ayu Mas Rajeg Bumi and is called Papak Selem. They were both the rulers and guardians of the island of Nusa Penida with the rest of his army from Bebutan and the vague people until the island of Nusa Penida became sacred until now. I Gede Mecaling did yoga semedi in Pura Nusa, at the age of 320, and moksa in the year Saka 400, and now stands a temple called Pura Nusa and renamed Pura Dalem Ped. While Sang Ayu Mas Rajeg Bumi meyoga semedi in Byas Muntig at the age of 245, and moksa in the year Saka 425.
