Thus, in terms of location, it can be explained that the function of this temple is a symbol of maintaining the balance of the universe.
Quoted from a book from the Balinese Culture in 1998 entitled "Lempuyang Luhur", it is said that Lempuyang comes from the word 'Lamp' which means Light, and word "Hyang" means God, such as Hyang Widhi Wasa. From that word Lempuyang means the holy light from God who is bright. Pura Lempuyang, which is locally called Pura Lempuyang Luhur, is one of the oldest and most respected temples in Bali. This respect is equivalent to Besakih, which is commonly called The mother temple of Bali. Regarding the age and position of the temples, these two temples are believed to be more than the majority of other temples on the island of Bali.
Pura Lempuyang Luhur and other Sad Kahyangan temples were founded in the 11th century AD when Mpu Kuturan accompanied King Udayana to rule Bali with his empress. Sad Kahyangan Temple was established to protect Bali so that its people continue to do things that are justified according to religious teachings. In the Lontar Kutara Kanda Dewa Purana Bangsul it is stated that Sang Hyang Parameswara brought mountains in Bali from Jambhudwipa (India), from Mount Mahameru. The piece of Mount Mahameru was brought to Bali and broken into three large parts and also small parts. The middle part is made into Mount Batur and Mount Rinjani, while the peak becomes Mount Agung. The smaller fragments form a series of mountains in Bali that are connected to one another. These mountains include Mount Tapsahi, Pengelengan, Siladnyana, Beratan, Batukaru, Nagaloka, Pulaki, Sangkur Peak, Rangda Hill, Trate Bang, Padang Dawa, Andhakasa, Uluwatu, Sraya and Mount Lempuhyang. In Old Javanese language Lempuh which means `` gamongan ''. Sang Hyang Parameswara brought the mountain ranges that surround the island of Bali as the stana of the gods manifestation of God to protect Bali. In the Lontar Kutara Kanda Dewa Purana Bangsul it was also stated that Sang Parameswara assigned his son Sang Hyang Agnijayasakti to go down to Bali and take care of Bali's welfare and stay at Mount Lempuhyang or Mount Gamorangan along with other gods.
In the Sading C inscription in 1072 Saka states that Mount Lempuh which is also named Mount Adri Karang. It was on Mount Adri Karang that Raja Jayasakti meditated, which is why the mountain was also named Karangsemadi. Raja Jayasakti was ordered by his father Sang Hyang Guru to go down to Bali to build a temple to make it a safe and prosperous area. Raja Jayasakti invited the pandita and his assistants and the people to realize Sang Hyang Guru's command to build Bali by starting with the construction of a temple on Mount Lempuh which was a place for worshiping God as Sang Hyang Iswara. Previously, Raja Jayasakti conducted meditation as the first step in building a safe and prosperous life in Bali. From Lempuyang Temple, the rays of religious leadership are emitted to illuminate the body and soul of the Balinese people to realize their life aspirations of building a safe and prosperous Bali.
